The Advertising Era Officially Begins on ChatGPT

OpenAI has officially announced that it will begin testing advertising integration on the ChatGPT platform. According to the statement, ads will be shown to free ChatGPT users and those subscribed to the newly introduced Go plan. Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers will be excluded from this testing phase.

Ads Will Be Positioned Separately from AI Responses

OpenAI emphasized that advertisements will not appear within the same area as ChatGPT-generated responses. AI answers will not be influenced by ads, and advertisements will be displayed in clearly labeled, separate sections.

It was also stated that user conversations will not be shared with advertisers, and chat content will not be used for ad targeting purposes.

Testing Will Begin in the United States

The ad-supported experience will initially be tested only with free users in the United States. OpenAI has not yet shared an official timeline for global rollout.

Why Is OpenAI Adopting an Advertising Model?

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that many users want to use AI tools extensively but are unwilling to pay for them. According to Altman, an ad-supported model offers a sustainable solution that could allow ChatGPT to reach a much broader audience.

A New Era for AI and Advertising

The integration of ads into ChatGPT signals that digital advertising will no longer be limited to search engines and social media platforms. As answer engines become a new point of interaction, this shift brings new opportunities for advertisers while also ushering in an era focused on transparency and trust.
